Seaweed called wakame: If you haven’t heard of this seaweed native to Japan yet, you can bet you will soon. In a Japanese study at Hokkaido University led by researcher Kazuo Miyashita, PhD, fucoxanthin found in wakame was shown to promote fat burning within the fat cells in animals. Fucoxanthin fights fat in two ways; first, it encourages the action of protein, UCP1, that causes fat oxidation and is found in the type of fat that surrounds organs. Secondly, fucoxanthin promotes DHA production in the liver. Increased DHA, an omega 3 fatty acid type, can help with decreasing bad cholesterol or LDL.
Physical activity helps burn abdominal fat. “One of the biggest benefits of exercise is that you get a lot of bang for your buck on body composition,” Stewart says. Exercise seems to work off belly fat in particular because it reduces circulating levels of insulin—which would otherwise signal the body to hang on to fat—and causes the liver to use up fatty acids, especially those nearby visceral fat deposits, he says.
Popcorn is a whole grain, so it’s not unreasonable to include it on your green-light food list. Many legumes are low on the glycemic index, which measures the impact a food has on your blood sugar. Peanuts rank as one of the lowest in glycemic load (GL), meaning they help keep your glucose at an even keel. Here's why that's important: in a study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers concluded that overweight men and women who followed a low-GL diet for 8 weeks had 11 percent less visceral fat compared to those on a high-GL diet. That may be because low-GL foods prompt less insulin release and thus less fat storage. Separate research also showed that eating nuts (including peanuts) was associated with a slimmer waistline and lower BMI.


Rather than a long and low-intensity cardio workout, try the HIIT method of cardio: intense, fast-paced intervals that leave you completely exhausted after only a 20- to 30-minute session. This form of cardio training increases the afterburn effect, allowing your body to continue burning calories long after your workout is over. You can rotate between 30 seconds of your favorite exercises, with rest in between, as long as they work different muscle groups—such as squats, push-ups and kettlebell swings.
